Rafa van der Vaart reflects on his successful first season at Spurs in Hotspur - and reveals he had a chat with Edgar Davids before his late, late move to the club on transfer deadline day.

Rafa was a revelation in his debut season in England.

Snapped up from Real Madrid in the final hours of the summer window, he went on to score on his home debut and then register in six-successive matches at the Lane between September-November.

In the end he scored 15 goals in all competitions including 13 in 28 starts in the Premier League - his final strike a memorable dipping volley that set-up our first league win at Anfield in 17 years and went a long way to clinching fifth place.

He was also on the shortlist for the prestigious PFA Player of the Season Award.

The switch from Real to Spurs happened so quickly, Rafa admitted in July's issue of Hotspur that he hardly had time to speak to anyone about it.

But he did managed talk to one Dutch legend who knew all about Spurs - Edgar Davids, whoplayed 44 times for us between 2005-07.

"I had some contact with Edgar, who had also played for Spurs, and he told me it was a great club and the people are good," said Rafa.

"He also said the league would fit me well.

"It wasn't easy to leave Real Madrid because I had a great life there.

"They are the biggest club in the world so I was quite happy but when Spurs came in I spoke with the manager and the chairman, fell in love with the club and wanted to join Tottenham."
