Doherty's double top!

Posted on 1 August 2000  - 12:00

English Barclays Premiership

Gary Doherty celebrated a double as our second string beat non-league outfit Chesham United 3-1 in Brian Statham's Benefit. The Republic of Ireland international bagged a couple of headers in the first half as we enjoyed plenty of possession in our second pre-season friendly at The Meadow.

John Piercy, later singled out for praise by manager Chris Hughton, crossed for Doherty to nod in the opener after 24 minutes. Ten minutes later, Dave McEwen's fine work down the left flank was rewarded when Doherty got across his defender to claim his second.

The home side hit back just before the break with a free-kick to make it 2-1 and forced goalkeeper Gavin Kelly into action in their best period in the second half. But we had the last word when Ian Hillier headed home Ruel Fox's corner.

Boss Hughton said: "The most important thing was to have another good work out and not get any injuries, so it was ideal on that front.

"We had a lot of possession, created a lot of space and I thought John Piercy played well at right-back. He got forward and was more like a right winger at times. We had more penetration than we had at Aylesbury and overall, it was another good match for us."

Next up is a trip to Sittingbourne's Central Park on Tuesday evening and Ramon Vega and Luke Young have been drafted into the squad.

"We're looking at fitness, gaining a better understanding and more fluency in our game," added Hughton. "And it's also an opportunity for a couple of first team lads who haven't played as much so far to get a game under their belts."

Spurs v Chesham United: Kelly, Piercy, Hillier, Thelwell, Taricco, Fox (Darbo 70), Fenn, Davies, Etherington, Doherty, McEwen.

Squad for Sittingbourne: Kelly, Piercy, Hillier, Thelwell, Young, Fox, Fenn, Davies, Vega, Doherty, McEwen, Darbo.

Meanwhile, the ticket office has announced a successful start to the season with all tickets sold for the opening Premiership match against Ipswich.
