Boss Mick McCarthy announced his 23-man squad for Japan and South Korea in Dublin this morning and, unfortunately, 'Doc' will not be on the plane.
He had harboured slim hopes of making the final cut after returning to the international fold with a goal against the USA in last month's friendly but always realised it was an unlikely dream.
"You always have that bit of optimism," said Doc at Spurs Lodge this afternoon. "Mick was very good. He rang me last night and gave me the news. Even though you are half expecting it, it's still a bit devastating.
"Mick gave me the phone call yesterday afternoon so I had plenty of time to think about it. It was good because I could warn my mum and dad, my mates and family. They all knew before it came out in the press."
Was it a sleepless night after that telephone conversation? "You are always thinking about it," he admitted.
"But you've got to keep your head up, hopefully have a good summer and we'll see how it goes next year."
