After what Doherty described as a ‘terrible’ first half show, Branko Strupar’s double strike, the second from the penalty spot, left us trailing 2-0 and with a mountain to climb.
But the second half was a different story. Taribo West’s own goal gave us hope but despite all the pressure, scrambles, last-ditch clearances and desperate defending, the second goal just wouldn’t materialise.
George was far from happy with that first half display and Doherty admitted: “The gaffer gave us a rollicking at half-time because we were terrible in the first half.
“We did ourselves a little bit of justice in the second half but the first half cost us.
“They sat off and defended, we had a few chances, a few goalmouth scrambles but for the most part they defended well.
“I spoke to Rory (Delap) and he said that Derby have been dropping off all season, getting leads and holding onto them.
“I suppose it’s fair enough because they held onto it but we were disappointed with out first half performance, two set-piece goals cost us again.”
Gary Doherty has revealed a half-time tongue-lashing from George Graham almost stirred us into an unlikely comeback at Derby County on Saturday.
