The versatile Irish international's late appearance as substitute at St Mary's was his first since November.
He had returned to the squad on New Year's Day after a nagging knee injury sidelined him for a fortnight in December.
But 'Doc' was in no mood for any personal positives at St Mary's. "There is no personal triumph for getting back in the team," he confessed.
"It was a terrible result, a terrible performance and one to forget. The lads are devastated. This is the most hurt I've seen the players since I've been at the club.
"Hopefully we can bounce back in the Everton game. We've a long time to think about and analyse this game but we have to start again."
