Doc eyes Ireland future

Posted on 17 November 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Gary Doherty says that the Republic of Ireland are now looking to the future after missing out on Euro 2004 qualification.

The Republic take on Canada in Dublin on Tuesday and Gary reports that he is excited by the inclusion of two new young players in the squad.

"There are some fresh players in the squad now who are top quality," he said. "Liam Miller and Andy Reid have come in and we're looking forward to seeing what they can bring to us.

"They will give us a few more options I think."

Not qualifying for the Euro finals in Portugal Gary describes as a big blow, but feels it was always going to be a tall order for manager Brian Kerr when he took over after the opening two defeats.

"We are looking to the future now. It was a big blow for us, but it was difficult for Brian to pull round because we had such a terrible start.

"We tried our hardest and the people in Ireland realised that and stayed behind us. Hopefully now, under the Brian Kerr era, we can get the new players through and start producing again for Ireland."

If he features for Canada, how about a goal past Lars Hirschfeld then?

"It would be nice, I've been winding the keepers up because I've already got one past Kasey for Ireland - I now want one past Lars as well."
