Ledley King admitted his disappointment over missing out on the opening game of the season through injury.
The England international has been suffering with a groin problem and suffered a small tear, which proved to be a setback in his preparations for the new season.
"After coming back into pre-season, you try and do everything you can to be ready for the first game," reasoned the captain. "It was disappointing for me to miss it.
"I tried to make sure it was right by missing certain games in pre-season but, at the wrong time, it started to play up again."
Ledley reports the tear is not a major issue and hopes when he returns it will be a long-term pain-free experience.
"We are not sure when yet, I don't think the tear is too much of a problem, it is what I had before really. It just needs to settle down and I want to be back playing pain-free.
"I am confident this is not too far away."
Meanwhile, Ledley agreed this is not the year to be absent from too many international squads, but suspects he will benefit from resting now as the season progresses.
"Of course not, when I do get back I want to make sure that is it and I don't have any more problems with the groin. At the moment I am doing everything I can to make sure that is the case when I come back."
