Digger's Diary

Posted on 25 May 2004 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

I'M BACK home in Wales and enjoying a break, although I can't help thinking ahead to next season when hopefully I'll be fully fit again and we'll all be raring to go. At the moment though, I've got to relax and protect my shin, which was still giving me a bit of trouble at the end of the season. That's why I didn't play the last game at Wolves and why I've had to pull out of the Wales squad for our games against Norway and Canada. Believe me, that's the last thing I wanted after missing so many games last season but I've got to get this injury right for next season. I can't come back for pre-season with it still bothering me, that would be a disaster. So, unfortunately, that means having to miss a couple of Wales friendlies. I love playing for Wales but I have to look at the bigger picture this time.
SO I MISSED out at Wolves but the lads picked up a good result and we finished the season well in the end with wins against Blackburn and Wolves. That doesn't hide the disappointments of the season though and all the lads are determined to put that right next season. As I've said, on a personal level, the season has been a disaster with my first long-term injury keeping me out for four months and my shin affecting me towards the end of the season. Add the end of the season we had at the club and then throw in Wales just missing out on Euro 2004 and you can see it's one I want to forget.
MARK YEATES did well at Wolves and he's another youngster to come through to the Premiership this season. We all know what he can do, he has great ability and is a very talented player. He deserved a chance and got it and joins the likes of John Jackson, Dean Marney and Stephen Kelly who have come in and done well at the top level. It can only be good news for the future.
AS WE ALL know, there have been a lot of changes at the club in the last week or so. We're all away from the club so it's difficult to comment really but you can't argue with what Frank Arnesen has done at PSV, bringing in the likes of Ronaldo and Ruud Van Nistelrooy. With a new manager to come as well this summer it's exciting times at the club.
DAVID PLEAT has left the club and I'd like to put on record my thanks for the role he's played in my career. He was behind bringing myself and Matty Etherington to the club from Peterborough and it's fair to say I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him. He was always fully behind me as a player and I wish him well.
TALKING about Matty, he has a massive game at the Millennium Stadium this Saturday when West Ham play Palace for a place in the Premiership. He scored an unbelievable goal to help beat Ipswich in the semi-finals last week and he's done really well there. The fans have taken to him and he's been named Player of the Year at Upton Park. I spoke to him the other day and he can't wait for Saturday. I've wished him all the best and it would be nice for him to return to the Premiership.
THIS IS my final diary entry for the season. I've thoroughly enjoyed giving my thoughts throughout the season and would like to thank the fans for their support during what has been a tricky time for everyone.
Until next time,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Simon
