The South Korean international forward found the net eight times in all competitions during his debut campaign in England after his 2015 switch from Bayer Leverkusen.
But he kicked into a whole new gear in 2016-17 and was influential as we secured a second place finish in the Premier League and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, the 24-year-old becoming only the second Spur behind Harry Kane to win the Premier League’s EA SPORTS Player of the Month award twice in a single season.
His 21-goal haul, coupled with the scoring exploits of Harry and Dele Alli, meant we saw three players clear 20 goals in one campaign for the first time ever and Eric didn’t fail to notice Sonny’s contributions.
“It’s fantastic, I’m really happy for him because he had a difficult time in his first season adapting to everything,” explained the England star of the attacking midfielder, who is currently recovering from a fractured forearm suffered on international duty. “I think he had good spells and bad spells but you could always see his quality. He’s a fantastic player with a lot of quality and it’s great that last season he was able to show that, so credit to him – he kept going, kept working hard and now he’s reaping the rewards so everyone’s very happy for him.
“I hope he can build on this now. He’s a fantastic player, he’s got so much quality, he’s quick, strong, can dribble, can shoot with both feet so he’s got a bit of everything and it’s up to him now really if he wants to push on again to another level.”
