Our young midfielder has earned his first call-up to the England Under-21 squad for tonight’s match against the USA Under-23 side and Monday’s European qualifier in Norway.
Already capped at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 levels by the Young Lions, Dele says he’s looking to continue his progress on the field with Gareth Southgate’s side, following on from his recent Premier League appearances and goal against Leicester City in our opening matches of the season.
“I’m delighted to get the chance to play for England Under-21s. I’ve been working for it for a long time so I’m glad it’s finally happened,” said the 19-year-old, who featured as a second half substitute in our goalless draw with Everton at White Hart Lane last Saturday.
“It’s another step up in terms of the international levels, but I thought I was ready for it before when I moved up a level and hopefully I’m ready for it now.
“I feel like I’m in good form, I’ve bedded in comfortably at Spurs and although it will be another step up to play for England’s Under-21 team, I feel like I’m ready for it.
“Whenever you play for England there’s a lot of responsibility on you, but that’s not something that will distract me. I just want to go out, do my normal stuff and play as well as I can.”
Eric Dier has joined Dele in the England Under-21s squad, with the pair set to come up against Cameron Carter-Vickers tonight – our young defender being part of the States’ Under-23 side.
Kick-off at Preston North End is at 7.45pm.
