'This shows we mean business' - Eriksen, Dele and Trippier on Real win

Thu 02 November 2017, 17:00|Tottenham Hotspur

There were two themes from the dressing room after our magical win against Real Madrid in the Champions League. One - make it the first of many. Two - we've reached the knockout stage, but let's try to win the group.

Asked if it felt like an historical moment or just another, albeit special, night at the office, Christian offered this assessment.

"It’s a mix (of feelings)," he said. "Of course, being in there with the fans tonight is a special feeling. Remembering it will be something later in a few years’ time but hopefully there will be many more successes and this will just be one of them in the history we can write and the memories we can create. It’s the first step and a big thing for us and the fans to beat the champions Real Madrid, a very good feeling."

Christian put the icing on the cake and the issue beyond doubt with a well-crafted third goal in the second half, a textbook counter-attack started by two-goal Dele Alli on to Harry Kane, who provided the pass for Christian to finish.

"It’s a special feeling and the icing on the cake, that always tastes nice and this feeling is also a very nice feeling!" he said. "It's a very good result to show to Europe and the rest of the world that we mean business."

Here's what Christian, Dele and Kieran Trippier, provider for Dele's first, had to say after a glory, glory night at Wembley...

Christian Eriksen

On our approach to the game...
"The tactics were the same as over there. We went into the game as every other game. Of course, we know it’s Real Madrid so we expect to have less of the ball but when we had the ball we were better than at the Bernabeu which gave us a bit of confidence going forward into the last third. It sounds even better with three goals, you can’t not be happy with that!"

On what the result means...
"It was a special feeling and to come here and play against Real Madrid at Wembley in the Champions League. Last season they won the trophy but we beat them tonight to show what we’re capable of. Real Madrid expect to win every game, so that’s a very good feeling and gives us a lot of confidence going into our next games."

On the final group matches against Borussia Dortmund (away, November 21) and APOEL (home, December 6)...
"We go into every game trying to win, just like we did today. It’s a feeling that we’ve something to play for, a bit less pressure now but we’ll take the last two games very seriously and try to make a good statement before we go into the knockout stages, which will be fun to play in."

A special night?
"It feels unbelievable. We’ve worked really hard this week tactically obviously coming off a really difficult result against United. We knew we had to put that result right. We started well and I thought every single player played really well and the subs that came on made a difference as well."

On his assist for Dele's goal...
"I try to create as much as I can for my team-mates. We all know each other’s positioning, we’ve got a great understanding and Dele was there to slot it home. We all played well. It was a great performance and now we move on to Palace."

What did this game and win mean to you and the team?
"These are the games I’ve wanted to play in ever since I was a young boy watching the Champions League. To play against Real Madrid is a great feeling and to win...they are a quality side and they haven’t been beaten in the group stage since 2012, 30 games unbeaten in the group stage."

On the final group matches...
"I know we’ve qualified but we need to go into those last two games and try to take maximum points. We don’t want to take our foot off the gas. We want to go to Dortmund next and try to get the three points. We want to win every game we play and try to win the group."

Dele Alli

On his opening goal and being there for Kieran Trippier's second cross!
"I was disappointed I wasn’t in there for the first chance (Kieran's cross 10 minutes before the opener) and as soon as the pass went out the second time I knew Trips was going to put the same ball in and I had to make sure I got there. Thankfully I got there first and it went in. I was delighted to score the two goals but more importantly it was a fantastic result."

Take us into the dressing room...
"Everyone is buzzing. We all know how good we are as a team, we knew if we stayed solid at the back and the away game gave us a lot of confidence. We’re all delighted. It’s a great result to build on. I missed a header for my hat-trick, that was disappointing. It was a professional performance from us. Okay, they got a goal back but it’s very rare that they don’t score. It was a great performance."
