It was noticeable that the in-form striker stayed on the pitch for an extra few minutes before the game after the rest of the lads had gone back down the tunnel to prepare for kick-off.
Minutes before kick-off, it was announced that we’d made a late change – JD was out, Danny Murphy started and young midfielder Jamie O’Hara took his place on the bench.
Martin explained: “Jermain went out for the warm-up, turned and tweaked his knee. We had to make a big decision not to play him because he said he could try, but he could have gone on and maybe had to come off after a couple of minutes, and that is not what you want."
Jermain joined Aaron Lennon, Robbie Keane, Jermaine Jenas, Teemu Tainio and Paul Stalteri on the missing list at St James’ Park.
Martin said he was an obvious doubt for the Boxing Day clash against Aston Villa at the Lane, but didn’t rule him out completely.
Martin Jol reported that Jermain Defoe was a late withdrawal from the starting line-up at Newcastle after injuring his knee in the warm-up.
