Andre Villas-Boas admitted defeat 'felt a little harsh' after Sunday’s 3-2 loss in the Premier League at Liverpool.

It was a rollercoaster encounter at Anfield that saw the Reds start brightly and open the scoring through Luis Suarez in the 21st minute.

We responded well though and levelled just before half-time when Jan Vertonghen headed home Gareth Bale’s cross.

The same combination handed us the lead in the 53rd minute as we took a hold on the game and Gylfi Sigurdsson soon struck the woodwork.

However, momentum switched back to the home side out of nothing when Kyle Walker’s crossfield pass was picked off by Stewart Downing, who took it around the advancing Hugo Lloris and slotted home.

With eight minutes remaining, Suarez was fouled in the box by Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Steven Gerrard made no mistake from the spot.

That ended our run of 12 matches without defeat in the Premier League and was our first loss since the last time we were on Merseyside – 2-1 at Everton back in December.

“It’s difficult for us to take because we did ever so well to come back into the game in the first half and started so brightly in the second half,” reflected Andre.

“We were in control of the game and then it changed very quickly.

“We lost control of the momentum of the game and let Liverpool believe they could turn it around.

“The performance overall was good, but we’d want to avoid a couple of things that we did wrong. Still, it was a good performance and the feeling is a little harsh because the players understand that we could have won here."
