Deano was pretty much a regular in our starting X1s after joining from Southampton until a knee injury at Arsenal ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
Now, with Goran Bunjevcevic and Gary Doherty back in the picture after long-term injuries and Ben Thatcher having thrown his hat in the ring with fine performances in the second half of last term, Glenn is not short of options.
Dean believes that this is a good thing and can only help the team achieve their targets.
"Definitely, it's always good," said Dean. "If you look in our position we've got a lot of strength. It's competition for places, but that is good for everyone in the team.
"We want to achieve something, win some silverware and hopefully finish in a European place. That was the aim last season but we missed out and it has got to be the aim this season and we can improve on what we did.
"We want to be going in the right direction."
Meanwhile, after a week of pre-season training, Dean is looking forward to getting stuck into some games.
"We played on Sunday and then we've got Tuesday and Thursday. I think that is the best way to get fitness really. You can run around as much as you want but you get fit by playing games, so it will be good to get a few games under the belt."
Dean Richards welcomes the hot competition for places in central defensive positions ahead of the new season.
