The long, drawn-out affair finally came to end this afternoon when ‘Deano’ was unveiled as the latest piece of Glenn Hoddle’s jigsaw.
He has joined us in an £8.1million deal and signed a four-year contract.
“There have been a few hitches along the line but I was always hopeful,” said Dean at Spurs Lodge.
“It was a move that I wanted and I won’t lie to anyone, as soon as Spurs showed an interest it was a club I was keen to join. I’m just delighted to be here.”
The 27-year-old indicated that Glenn was a key factor in his arrival.
“I worked with Glenn at Southampton for 18 months and his coaching on the training ground brought my game a lot,” he revealed. “That was a major factor.
“There is a lot of experience in the team but if you look at the defence, that’s the only area that is lacking in real experience. That was a factor in Glenn wanting to bring me here as well.
“They are a good attacking side, play good football and I watched the other night against Sunderland and they played very well.”
Glenn earlier suggested that the former Wolves defender could become part of England’s plans if he continued to improve at the same rate as he had at Southampton.
Dean said: “For me, it’s important I do well here first of all. That’s my main priority. I’ll worry about England later — if it happens, that will be a bonus but at the moment I just want to play for Spurs.
“I’d like to think this club can get back to the top,” he added. “That’s why I’ve come here. The club has potential and the backing to go for major honours.
“Hopefully I’ll be able to look back at my career here and I’ll have won a few trophies.”
Dean Richards has admitted he wanted to come to White Hart Lane as soon as we showed an interest in him.
