Erik stepped off the bench in place of Ezequiel Lavezzi midway through the second period as Argentina comfortably secured their place in the final in front of a sellout crowd of more than 70,000 at NRG Stadium in Houston Texas.
The attacking midfielder’s side was already three goals to the good at the time of his introduction thanks to strikes from Lavezzi, Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain, with the latter completing the scoring shortly before full-time.
US right-back DeAndre, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland, came straight back into the starting XI for the host nation after missing last week’s victory over Ecuador through suspension and completed the full 90 minutes.
It proved to be a night to forget for the 22-year-old, though, and he and his compatriots will now meet the winners of tonight’s second semi-final between Colombia and reigning champions Chile in the third place play-off in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The final takes place in the early hours of Monday morning.
