The powerhouse central defender admits that the team never got going from the off and suffered as a result.
"We never got started from the first whistle and were second best all over the park really," reflected Dean.
"They are fighting for their lives and we knew it would be a tough game, but we never got out of the traps."
Dean added that it is difficult to pinpoint exactly why the team did not establish a foothold in the game.
"I'm not sure. You have these games from time to time and you try and put your finger on it. You think about it afterwards, but they started much better than us.
"It's always hard to pick yourselves up when you don't start well - it is harder to get going. It is easier to start fast and slow down, but not when you start slowly and try and speed up.
"I think they key to the game was the start. We felt if we could have started well and got the first goal it would have put them under pressure with the crowd. You've got to give them credit really."
Dean Richards feels that a poor start cost us dearly against West Ham on Saturday.
