Davies caught the eye of many a Premiership manager in a purple patch of 10 goals in 16 games at The Dell in 1997-98.
That earned a big-money move to Blackburn in 1998 but things didn't work out at Ewood Park and he was back at Southampton just over a year later.
He arrived at Bolton in the summer via a loan spell at Millwall and appears to have rediscovered his form under Sam Allardyce - he's bagged three of his side's eight Premiership goals this term.
Defender Dean, with Davies at Southampton between 1999-2001, said: "Kev's quick, strong and always had bags of ability. He's a very good player and very underestimated.
"I think at times when I was with him at Southampton he just lost that self-confidence now and again.
"He now has a manager who believes in him and he's playing well again.
"He's always had the ability and confidence was the key thing. He's playing every week so he's fit, sharp and he'll be a danger."
Dean Richards won't underestimate the threat of his former Southampton team mate Kevin Davies on Saturday.
