Daz: We need a run

Posted on 4 January 2001  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Darren Anderton has turned his attention to Saturday’s FA Cup tie at Leyton Orient with this warning: “We need a run — now.”

Anderton was outstanding in Tuesday’s 4-2 victory against Newcastle United in the Premiership. That result ended a disappointing sequence of six games without a win and quickly banished memories of dismal away defeats at Southampton and Ipswich Town.

Third Division high-flyers Orient are next and you feel the footballing world will be looking in at Brisbane Road for a classic FA Cup shock.

Our away form this season is well documented — three draws and nine defeats in 12 games including the Worthington Cup — while the O’s home form is even better than ours with nine wins and three draws in 12 unbeaten matches.

So was there a bit of anxiety creeping in? “I hope not,” he declared. “I think we have to go into that game with confidence now.

“Not a lot of nice things have been said about us, perhaps rightly so and Newcastle was a big test, especially after going a goal down, but we kept going, got the goals and there were plenty of positives.

“It will be difficult at Orient but it’s a game we’ve got to win.

“It’s a big cup game and we’ve been so inconsistent this season, we know that and we need to start a run now otherwise it could be a very ordinary season.”

Anderton singled out the returning Les Ferdinand after Tuesday night’s win. Ferdinand, back from another head knock, scored the fourth goals in a game that had three red cards, three penalties and six goals.

Anderton added: “We haven’t played well, we’ve played awful really, but having Les back was a big boost. He’s been outstanding for us this season.

“We needed that win big time and once we scored the first goal, the confidence came straight back.”
