The midfielder opened the scoring against Norwich City on Tuesday evening with a rifled effort from some 30 yards. Even the ever-modest Darren could not deny that it was a bit special...
"It wasn't bad!" he admitted sheepishly, adding that he knew it was in the moment it left his foot. "Carry pulled it back for me, I took a touch, and just pulled it back across the keeper.
"I think it went in the top corner - which was lovely. As soon as it left my boot I thought it was in the top corner.
"It is probably a waste scoring one like that at this time, to be honest. But it is nice to be out playing, the main thing is about fitness and Norwich gave us a good test and played some good football. So did we and it was quite a good game."
Darren, who has now featured in three out of the four pre-season games so far, says that he is feeling in pretty good nick ahead of the new season.
"I feel fine, very good. I played a full game at the weekend and nearly played a full one here. I've been training hard and feel great, now we're off to South Africa and we're looking forward to that."
Darren Anderton concedes that he would rather save spectacular goals until the season proper begins in mid-August.
