The 30-year-old picked up his first caution of the season against Aston Villa last week for a foul on Gareth Barry, but he admits he is unlikely to ever earn a 'midfield enforcer' tag.
"I don't know what that was all about!" he laughed. "I thought I won the ball."
In years gone by it would have been hard to imagine Darren getting involved in doing the midfield spadework - fancy footwork on the wing was more his forte. These days he is more than happy to do his bit in central areas as the compensation is a far greater involvement in the games.
"I used to be a winger, but I've got to do it now. I don't mind doing it, I like central midfield and being involved in the game.
"I'm glad to have been back in the for the last couple of games and am quite pleased with how it's gone."

"I think I have actually - it was for dissent though!"
Darren Anderton accepts that the odd yellow card could well go with the territory in his central midfield role.
