The 8-1 pre-season friendly win represented Darren’s first game since Achilles trouble ended his season in February.
He travelled to America to treat the problem and having returned successfully to training at the start of the month, comfortably completed his first 45 minutes back at Broadhall Way.
“I was happy to be out there playing,” he said. “I haven’t played for five months so it was nice to be back out there and ease my way into it.
“I feel fine. My Achilles felt good and that is the main thing and I can now look forward to the next game.”
Gus Poyet grabbed the spotlight with a hat-trick on his debut and Darren has been impressed with how he and fellow newcomers Teddy Sheringham and Goran Bunjevcevic have settled in.
He added: “The new players have settled in well. We’ve only been training for a couple of weeks and the likes of Teddy and Goran have only been with us for a few days.
“Gus has done superbly so far. He made a great start out there. He’s a quality player and I’m sure we’ll see much of that.”
So what of his aims for the season? “Personally, just to be fit to be honest and take it from there. I think we would like to get into Europe. That has to be our aim and hopefully we can achieve that.”
Darren Anderton was happy to report no ill effects after his return to action at Stevenage Borough on Friday night.
