“We need to win, simple as that,” declared the defender of Saturday’s derby at the Lane (12.45pm) as he prepares for his 54th game of 55 in this memorable campaign.
The Gunners arrive in N17 having taken huge strides towards securing their place in the top four with wins against Bolton and City but, as Michael points out, we have work to do to get back in the top seven and therefore back into the UEFA Cup.
“We’re eighth now and we need to win games – four would take us past that 60-point mark and hopefully we’ll start against Arsenal,” he stated.
“It will be an exciting end to the season, it’s in our hands and if we win our games, we can push up to fifth or sixth spot. We’ll concentrate on finishing as well as we can and trying to get back into Europe.”
Michael agreed that it would be perfect timing to come out on top in the derby after a couple of near misses in the Premiership last season and this season’s Carling Cup semi-final, where we led 2-0 in the first leg at the Lane, were hauled back to 2-2 and eventually lost in extra time at the Emirates.
Did we owe them one? “We certainly do!” insisted the central defender. “I’ve played them five times, last season home and away it was 1-1 and it was disappointing not to win on both occasions, then we had the disappointment of the semi-final as well.
“They are a good side but we know what this means to everyone at Spurs.
“We’ll try to get about them and play our football, we know our midfield and strikeforce can create chances and score goals against anyone, so I’m always confident we can beat teams, especially at home.”
