Michael Dawson couldn’t hide his emotions after Niko Kranjcar’s late winner against Bolton on Saturday.
The captain’s celebration just after Niko’s 20-yarder hit the back of the net was caught on camera as he jumped in delight as we collected another vital three points.
We dominated the early exchanges, led 1-0 via Rafael van der Vaart’s penalty and might have been 2-0 up, only for Rafa to miss a re-taken second spot-kick.
Bolton came back into it, levelled 10 minutes into the second half and it was then end-to-end before Niko’s 92nd-minute thunderbolt.
‘Daws’ said he was delighted with how the team bounced back from the disappointing FA Cup loss at Fulham last weekend with back-to-back wins in the Premier League against Blackburn and Bolton.
We remain fifth in the table but now level on 44 points with Chelsea after Liverpool’s win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
“It was a massive relief to get the win and six points in a week is a great return,” said Daws, who slotted back into central defence alongside William Gallas after suspension ruled him out at Ewood Park.
“We had so much possession in the first half, were awarded the penalties and at 2-0, it could have been all over.
“Unfortunately, Rafa had to take the second penalty again, missed it and at 1-0, Bolton would have always believed they had a chance to get back into the game.
“In the end it was a disappointing goal for us to give away so when Niko scored it was a massive moment for us. Every point is vital at this stage.”
Michael’s weekend got even better when he was called into Fabio Capello’s England squad for the friendly against Denmark on Wednesday.
“It’s always an honour to get the call,” he added. “I missed out last time through injury but hopefully I’ll get another cap. That would be great.”
