Simon Davies has been promoted to the senior squad ahead of Wales’ World Cup clash with Ukraine at the Millennium Stadium.
Davies call-up comes as under-21 coach Jimmy Shoulder blasted his players following a 3-0 defeat to the Ukraine — a fifth successive European Championship qualifying defeat.
“They turn up for Wales, they train and they play, but they do not prepare mentally,” lamented Shoulder.
“They need to raise their standards when they come to play for their country. We have too many lads who week-in week-out at their clubs are playing in a comfort zone.
“When they come to face international players they can't handle it when they have to contend with quality like they've faced against the Ukraine."
Davies avoided the coach’s wrath by stepping up to the senior pool as Mark Hughes’ side aim to build on the 2-2 draw secured in Armenia. A packed Millenium Stadium will be a useful learning experience for our midfield fringe player should he feature at any stage.
It will hopefully be ideal preparation for a possible visit in a club game in May…
Meanwhile, young midfielder Ciaran Toner was in the Northern Ireland Under-21 team beaten 2-0 by Bulgaria on Tuesday.
