We needed the first goal against Portsmouth on Boxing Day. In the second half we wanted to up our tempo, but they chased us with Yakubu doing some good forward running which do we didn't so as well. We didn't keep the ball well enough.
The players know that they've got to come to places and compete with passion. That is fine, but when you get the ball you've got to pass it well. We think we have got players capable of passing and front players capable of holding the ball up.
In the first half our front play was below standard, we didn't hold the ball up well enough. We were a threat a little bit with Dalmat and Carr coming forward, but too often we didn't keep the ball.
When you don't keep the ball it comes back at the centre halves who, in a strange way, had a strong game for us.
We have had a bad week or so in terms of morale, going behind to two terrific Robert goals at Newcastle and couldn't come back, two Berger free-kicks and also couldn't come back. But in the two intervening games against Middlesbrough and Manchester United the boys showed tremendous spirit.
While that spirit remains we'll be okay.
