So instrumental in recent games, Stephane did not appear his usual dynamic self and was replaced by Johnnie Jackson - who chipped in with a direct assist for Helder Postiga's decisive goal.
"Stephane wasn't feeling too good and I stayed with him for a short while in the dressing room after half-time," reported David. "He felt low on Friday and Saturday and was a bit ill. That's why we made the change."
David added that Ledley King, who failed a fitness test ahead of the game, is suffering with an ankle injury that will be assessed this week.
"Obviously we'll have to have a look at him. He was very sore around the tendon of his ankle and we hope there is no real problem."
Ledley's absence paved the way for Michael Brown to make his Spurs debut and David was suitably impressed with his impact on the game.
"He did fine, absolutely fine. He competed, hustled and Darren did his best in that respect too. Michael passes the ball easily and simply and covers a lot of ground."
David Pleat revealed that illness forced French midfielder Stephane Dalmat to withdraw at half-time against Liverpool on Saturday.
