Daggers drawn for reserves

Posted on 14 August 2001  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Simon Davies returns to the reserve group for Tuesday night's pre-season game at Dagenham and Redbridge (kick-off 7.45)as the second-string play their final scheduled friendly ahead of the new campaign, which begins on August 28.

Simon is added to the squad which secured a 1-1 draw at Dover on Saturday and is joined by Matthew Etherington, John Piercy, Alton Thelwell and Gavin Kelly, who all travelled with the first team to Greece at the weekend. Ben Bowditch and Paul O'Donoghue drop out.

Coach Colin Calderwood is happy with the way his group are progressing over the pre-season period and has shuffled the pack in terms of formation so players are prepared for a first team call should it come.

"It's a case of making sure that boys who don't travel with the first team have enough minutes on the pitch," said Colin. "But the way the first games have been, the ones ending up in my group have played quite a lot.

"We're beginning to get a bit of an understanding of how each other play and how we play as a team. Obviously, with the changes we have, there are five from Saturday, we are unlikely to get any continuity throughout the season.

"That why, when we do play, it is important to try and play and understand the systems that the first team play."

It would appear that with the first team squad looking powerful that the reserves could benefit should the players stay injury free. Colin has his doubts on that score.

"I think you've got to look at the schedule that the players in the first team squad might have, with internationals, Worthington Cup and that sort of thing. There may be a case of them playing some reserve team games, but I can't see it being if you don't play in the first team it's guaranteed you have to play a reserve game.

"It will just be a case of making sure they have enough playing minutes over a period of two to three weeks and if they haven't they might come into the reserve group."

Squad: Kelly, Jalal, Quilter, Hillier, Consorti, Thelwell, Toner, Piercy, Jackson, Etherington, Davies, Snee, Ferguson, Kamanan, Vedeux, Gardner.
