Georgiou 'honoured' after senior international bow for Cyprus

Anthony Georgiou certainly has a soft spot for the GSP Stadium in Nicosia after making a second debut there in the space of six months.

The scene of his first competitive Spurs appearance during our 3-0 UEFA Champions League victory over Cypriot side APOEL in September, the young winger was back at the 23,000-capacity venue to make his senior international debut in a friendly against Montenegro on Friday.

A product of our Academy, Anthony was thrust straight into the starting line-up in what was his first ever call-up by Cyprus – something the 21-year-old is understandably proud of.

“It’s an honour to play for your country, especially at first team level and I’m excited to hopefully play again,” said the youngster, who initially appeared for our first team in a pre-season friendly against Roma during last summer’s tour of the United States before coming off the bench in the aforementioned European clash with APOEL.

“It was at the same place that we played in the Champions League this season, so it was a bit of a coincidence to play there again, but I was excited to be able to start and show what I can do.

“I went there and worked hard in training, that’s luckily something that the manager liked, he gave me the opportunity to start and I was thrilled I was able to do that.”

Cyprus, who were in Belgium’s group in qualifying for this summer’s World Cup but ultimately fell short in their bid to make it to Russia, were unable to break the deadlock on Friday and the game ended 0-0, but Anthony remains full of positivity after another significant achievement on a personal level.

“The match started off a little bit slowly in the first half but I thought we were the better team after half-time – we created a lot of chances, defended well, I tried to make a few runs to help the team get forward and we were a little bit unlucky not to score,” said the Lewisham-born wide man, who unfortunately missed the bulk of last season with our Development Squad due to injury.

“We can build on the game, though, because there were some other new players in the team, so once everyone is used to each other we’ll be able to put a better performance in.

“I think playing for Cyprus definitely can help me in my career too – playing first team football on a big international stage is only going to benefit me. I’ve achieved some big things this season, especially coming off of a seven-month injury lay-off last year. To be able to come back in pre-season, get to play in some big pre-season games for the Club, then play in the Champions League and be on the bench a couple of times, it’s been a brilliant experience. I maybe didn’t expect everything that’s happened but I think I’ve worked hard, so hopefully I can carry on pushing now.”
