Countdown to SA

Posted on 14 July 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

We continue counting down to our tour of South Africa with the final part of a three-part series from Spurs hero Gary Mabbutt.

Our long-time skipper and FA Cup winner in 1991 has the honour of being chosen as an ambassador for South Africa's 2010 World Cup bid - extra special for 'Mabbsy' as his wife Kathy is from South Africa, her family is based in Johannesburg and the Mabbutt family are annual visitors.

In this final piece, Gary suggests Spurs will have to be on their mettle for the two friendlies against Orlando Pirates on July 26 and Kaizer Chiefs on July 29...

IT WILL BE a tough test for Tottenham in South Africa and two quality pre-season friendlies.

Overall you would like to think that Tottenham will win the games but as we saw with England in Durban in June, South African teams can certainly stand up and look after themselves.

As far as pre-season friendlies go, these are the two best teams in South Africa, if not the whole of Africa. It will be a good run out for Glenn and the boys. The first match will be at Kings Park in Durban and then they are playing at Newlands in Cape Town, which is a stunning stadium.

These teams are so well supported and a Premiership side going out there will be a feather in their caps if they can give themselves a good show. I'm thoroughly looking forward to it.

I've been going out there for quite a while and as an ambassador for their 2010 World Cup bid and it's great Tottenham are going out to support that bid.
