Countdown: Stephen Clemence

English Barclays Premiership

Stephen Clemence insists we have to be ruthless against Premiership newcomers Ipswich Town on Saturday.

There is a school of thought that it will be an easy first fixture against George Burley's newly-promoted outfit, one of the favourites for relegation, but Clemence and everyone else at the club know better than to think like that.

The midfielder declared: "There is no easy game in the Premiership, certainly not when teams are playing at Tottenham anyway.

"It will probably be the first time a few of the Ipswich boys have played at White Hart Lane and it's a great boost playing at grounds like that and they will want to do well.

"They want to hold their own in the Premiership and prove they can stay in there. It's their first game and they will have something to prove to everyone. We have to go out there, be ruthless and get the three points."

As for the Premiership as a whole, Clemence fancies Liverpool to do well and knows we have to try and break into the league's new 'big five'.

He added: "Liverpool made progress last season and have made some good signings. Chelsea should do well because they are not in the Champions' League and they've also added to the squad.

"You've got to look at Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Leeds and Liverpool and the rest of us are fighting to break into that. It will be tough because they are five quality teams with big squads as well but that has to be our aim."
