Colin's big night

Posted on 28 August 2001 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Colin Calderwood takes his official bow as reserve team coach as the second string begin their season proper with a tough looking assignment against Nottingham Forest at Stevenage on Tuesday evening.
After a number of difficult pre-season friendlies against mostly Conference opposition, the real thing begins, coincidentally, against Colin’s previous club.
“It’s our first competitive game and you obviously look forward to those occasions,” said Colin. “They are basically how we will be judged throughout the season, all the other games, friendlies and pre-season games, are building blocks towards what we want to do in the league.
“From the start I am sure there will be a different edge to our game from what there was against Charlton the other day.”
Colin has been satisfied with the progress made during the preparation programme, one that began with a couple of defeats and steadily improved.
“I can’t really complain. We’ve played against a few Conference sides and a couple of league sides as well. It’s been good.”
So how does Colin view the reserve campaign? Is it about development of potential first team players or winning the league?
“It’s obviously a bit of both. What will happen is our reserve team this week will be very different from what it will be the week after and that’s how it will be during the season.
“In some ways we are fortunate that we will have four or five people away on international duty. We’ll be missing them, but it will give an opportunity for some of the under-19s to step into the fold.
“Really, at the minute, you don’t know what your reserve team is going to be until the day of the game and it’s difficult to say whether you are going to have a strong enough side to win the game. It all depends on who comes through at the weekend and who doesn’t play enough minutes to get themselves out of the reserve game.”
Of course, Colin has an inside track on Forest having recently departed, and he played for their reserves for much of last season.
“Looking at the team they had out in there first game, it was basically the same as they had in their first team the year before.
“Paul Hart’s introduced six or seven younger boys into the first team and the more experienced ones are in the reserves. If it’s that sort of team that comers we’re going to be in for a very tough game.
“The players that come down on Tuesday will be looking to prove a point to get back in the Forest first team.”<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
