Chris Hughton explained that recent performances sent the team in against Liverpool in a confident frame of mind.
Both teams had enjoyed 100 per cent records since the turn of the year and something had to give. Chris said the team took considerable heart from their performances against Crystal Palace, Birmingham and Leeds.
"I'd have to say that, going into the game, we were fairly confident and I think that comes from us having a good run - particularly at home. It is now only showing results-wise, but the performances are good.
"We were confident before, but you never know how it is going to pan out. Liverpool have got a good side with Michael Owen back playing and I thought Heskey played very well. It was a wonderful result for us."
Chris added that there was a degree of anxiety ahead of the game, given the failed fitness test of Ledley King and an overall lack of inches in the side.
"I think the concern was there," admitted Chris. "When you have lost Fredi Kanoute at 6ft 4" and Gus Poyet, who does very well in the air for us and then Ledley King, you are always concerned about set plays. It does put more pressure on the lads who have to do a job for us.
"The boys did very well in that respect and it is testament to them, but it was always a worry."
