Spurs Diary - June

Looking ahead and back on events on the same day in years gone by.

1    THURSDAY

1926    George Robb born in Finsbury Park and would become a schoolteacher while playing for us as an amateur before signing professional forms in 1951.

1959    We beat Dynamo Kiev 2-1 on tour to Russia. Johnny Brooks scores both.

2    FRIDAY

1928    Goalkeeper Ron Reynolds born in Haslemere. He would join us from Aldershot in July, 1950.

1952    On tour in Canada we beat Victoria and District 7-0 with Eddie Baily (pictured, above) hitting four goals.

3    SATURDAY

1974    Ukrainian international hitman Sergei Rebrov born in Horlivka. He would join us from Dynamo Kiev, where he is currently manager, in May, 2000.

2004    We announce that French international manager Jacques Santini will take over as Spurs boss after Euro 2004.

4    SUNDAY

1957    Scottish midfielder Neil McNab born in Greenock. He would move to Spurs from Morton in February, 1974, initially as an amateur before signing as a full professional the following June.

1979    We win the Japan Cup with a 2-0 win over Dundee United in Tokyo. Scot Gordon Smith and Ossie Ardiles score.

5    MONDAY

1909    We draw 2-2 with Everton in a friendly in Palmermo. Walter Tull and Bert Middlemiss score.

1985    Mark Falco on target in our 1-1 draw with Brazil’s Vasco da Gama in Adelaide.

6    TUESDAY

1927    Half-back Ralph Wetton born in Rowland Gill, County Durham. He originally joined us as an amateur from local side Cheshunt in June, 1949.

1979    We beat a Bermuda Select XI 3-1 in Hamilton. A depleted squad meant that club secretary Peter Day and physio Mike Varney had to play.

7    WEDNESDAY

1941    We beat Fulham 2-1 at home in our final Football League South match of the season. Ralph Ward converts a penalty while future England striker Ivor Broadis, playing for us as a guest, also scores.

1947    A 1-1 draw with Barnsley in the Second Division at the Lane. Our goal comes from a Ronnie Dix penalty in a game that saw Ernie ‘Alphabet’ Jones make his Spurs debut.

8    THURSDAY

Will Miller’s 21st birthday.

1963    We defeat an NFL Select XI 5-2 in Durban. Cliff Jones and Jimmy Greaves both score twice with Terry Dyson also on target.

1974    Martin Chivers (pictured, above) nets a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory over Mauritius in Curepipe where Alan Gilzean bags a brace.

9    FRIDAY

1907    Jimmy Smailes born in South Moor, Yorkshire. The outside-left would join us from Huddersfield Town in March, 1931.

2006    Left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto signs from Lens.

10    SATURDAY

1909    The Uruguay League defeated 8-0 in Montevideo. Goal log: Clarke (3), Curtis (2), Minter (2), McConnon.

2001    Gus Poyet signs from Chelsea and goes on to make almost 100 senior appearances for us.

11    SUNDAY

1925    Sid McClellan born in Dagenham. The striker impressed us when he scored three for Chelmsford City against our Reserves and was signed in August, 1949.

1983    A 2-0 win over Manchester United in Swaziland where Steve Perryman and Gary Mabbutt score.

12    MONDAY

1945    Pat Jennings born in Newry and would come to us via Watford in June, 1964.

1966    Alan Gilzean hits the winner as we beat the Mexican National XI by the only goal in Mexico City in front of 100,000 spectators.

13    TUESDAY

1889    Harry Sparrow born in Faversham. A centre-forward, he would join us in a joint deal with Tommy Clay from Leicester Fosse in January, 1914.

1973    Harry Sparrow dies in Lincoln.

14    WEDNESDAY

1952    Five different marksmen on target as we beat Manchester United 5-0 in an exhibition match in Toronto – Sonny Walters, Les Bennett, Len Duquemin, Eddie Baily and Les Medley.

1971    Swiss international defender Ramon Vega (pictured, above) born in Olten and would join us in January, 1997.

15    THURSDAY

Vincent Janssen’s 23rd birthday.

1947    We lose 2-1 in a friendly at Toulouse. Charlie Rundle is our goalscorer.

1959    Scottish international Alan Brazil born in Glasgow and would join us from Ipswich Town in March, 1983.

16    FRIDAY

1909    Liga Argentina beaten 4-1 in a friendly at Palermo. Billy Minter among our goalscorers.

1974    Alan Gilzean hits three as we beat a Mauritius Select XI 6-0 in Curepipe.

17    SATURDAY

1966    Keith Weller, Frank Saul and Terry Venables score in Detroit as we continue our tour of Bermuda, the USA and Mexico with a 3-0 victory against Bayern Munich.

18    SUNDAY

1876    Full-back John Montgomery born in Chryston, Lanarkshire. He is believed to have become our first ever professional player when he signed for us in January, 1896.

1952    We enjoy an 8-0 triumph over the Quebec FA in Montreal. Sid McClennan and Les Bennett hit three apiece.

19    MONDAY

1947    Len Duquemin scores the only goal as we return from Montpelier with a narrow win.

1971    Striker Chris Armstrong (pictured, below) born in Newcastle and would move to us from Crystal Palace in the summer of 1995.

20    TUESDAY

1909    An amazing 9-0 triumph over Rosario while on tour of Argentina.

1942    Boxing at White Hart Lane sees a world light-heavyweight fight between defending champion Len Harvey and Freddie Mills. Mills wins by a second round knock-out in front of a 30,000 crowd.

21    WEDNESDAY

1957    St Etienne beaten 2-0 on their own ground. Charlie Rundle and Les Bennett score.

1965    Jimmy Greaves twice hits the net in a 3-1 friendly win over Hakoah in Haifa where Cliff Jones also scores.

22    THURSDAY

1915    Full-back Bert Sproston born in Elworth, Cheshire. The England international would join us from Leeds United in June, 1938.

1976    Terry Neill resigns as Spurs manager and is later replaced by his assistant Keith Burkinshaw.

23    FRIDAY

1880    Centre-forward Alex Young born in Slamannan, Stirlingshire. A future Scottish International, his move to Spurs in June, 1911, came after a good deal of success with Everton, including scoring their winner in the 1906 FA Cup Final.

24    SATURDAY

1909    We beat Alimini 5-0 on our Argentina-Uruguay tour. Billy Minter scores twice.

2003    Young Portuguese international striker Helder Postiga signs from Porto.

25    SUNDAY

Victor Wanyama’s 26th birthday.

1984    Peter Shreeves (pictured, below, with Clive and Paul Allen) confirmed as our new manager following Keith Burkinshaw’s resignation.

1995    We are beaten 2-0 by FC Lucerne in the InterToto Cup at Brighton’s Goldstone Ground.

26    MONDAY

1875    Defender Lycurgus Burrows born at Aston-under-Lyme. An amateur all his career, at one stage he was playing for both Spurs and Woolwich Arsenal!

2008    Brazil international goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes signs from PSV Eindhoven.

27    TUESDAY

1894    Harry Wilding born in Wolverhampton. A versatile player, he also won the Military medal in World War One and came to us from Chelsea in November, 1928.

1900    Goalkeeper Bill Kaine born in East Ham. He made his Spurs debut at Bury in October, 1925, but would go on to play just 12 senior games for us.

28    WEDNESDAY

1941    Bert Middlemiss dies in Brixham. A free-scoring winger, he was an important player for us between 1907-20.

29    THURSDAY

1908    Spurs elected to the Football League after overcoming Stoke, Lincoln Rotherham Town and Southport in a keenly-contested ballot.

2007    Forward Darren Bent signs from Charlton Athletic in a record deal.

30    FRIDAY

2006    Ivory Coast midfielder Didier Zokora signs from St Etienne.
