Club statement

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Manager George Graham has been dismissed summarily by the club for material breach of contract.

Director of Football David Pleat will take over for tomorrow's game with Coventry City and will continue to manage team affairs until a new manager is appointed.

Vice-Chairman David Buchler informed George Graham that his contract would be terminated following a brief meeting at White Hart Lane today.

Commented Mr Buchler: "We were left with no alternative. Selective details of a private discussion between David Pleat, George Graham and myself have been revealed to the press, giving a misleading impression as to our future plans. This is just not acceptable.

"We are trying to build a team here from top to bottom. We are pulling together for the good of the club and I have been taken aback by this whole situation. I asked Mr Graham to come and see me to discuss the situation but this meeting was acrimonious, to say the least.

"In the meantime we are luck to have a man of David Pleat's experience and proven track record to take charge."
