Club pays its respects to Tottenham war hero

Club Ambassador Ledley King today (Friday 23 March) joined the Mayor of Haringey, Councillor Stephen Mann, to unveil a commemorative paving stone at the Tottenham War Memorial in memory of Second Lieutenant Alfred Herring VC, a recipient of the Victoria Cross during the First World War.

As part of the Department for Communities and Local Government’s events to mark the Centenary of the First World War, all recipients of the Victoria Cross awarded between 1914 and 1918 will have a memorial stone unveiled in their honour in the borough they lived in. Second Lieutenant Herring’s paving stone is the first of four to be laid in Haringey. The other recipients’ paving stones will be laid later this year.

Alfred Cecil Herring was born in Tottenham on 26 October, 1888. He was educated at Bruce Grove Primary and Tottenham County Schools. He joined the Army in 1914 as a Paymaster. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery during an attack by the enemy on 23 and 24 March, 1918, at Montagne Bridge, France.

Ledley King said: “The Club has a long history of supporting the Armed Forces. It is important for us to come together as a community to remember the heroic actions of Alfred Herring and reflect on the incredible courage displayed by him and many others 100 years ago.”
