Clive Allen conceded that we made hard work of Wednesday night's 2-1 reserve win against West Ham at Upton Park.
We created a host of chances in an action-packed first half but only had 1-0 lead at half-time via Milenko Acimovic's header to show for it.
West Ham came more and more into the game in the second half and Bobby Zamora's close range strike to double our lead after 67 minutes was against the run of play.
The home side pulled a goal back three minutes later and forced keeper Rob Burch into action twice in the last 15 minutes but we held on for maximum points.
"Yes, we did make hard work of it," said coach Clive afterwards. "We started well in the frst half, created plenty of chances, didn't take them and West Ham showed enthusiasm and determination in the second half.
"They were still in the game at half-time, we talked about that and knew we had to carry on and do it right in the second half.
"Obviously we went 2-0 up and we would have liked to have controlled the game from there but we let it slip away.
"West Ham were young, enthusiastic and kept going so that made it into a difficult evening for us."
