After setting a Club record 17 in as many games last season, Barney is well on the way to overtaking that figure and now has 13 in 12 reserve games so far following his clinical treble against the Hornets.
"I've just spoken to him about his goals and he worked really hard to capitalise on a mistake to get the first one and the second one was something we have been working on in training in terms of the type of strike," explained Clive. "It was a good cut back from Emil Hallfredsson and he fired it into the net.
"The third one he expected the poor back pass, seized on that and got himself and hat-trick. He could have got six, I told him that and he appreciates it, but he is in good form and looks like he is going to score goals.
He is working very hard, he is willing and is making good progress
Lee is getting different types of goals, that is the pleasing thing, he is on the end of crosses, putting defenders under pressure and I think he is showing a lot of composure in front of goal.
"He is had a good first half of the season."
Clive went on to reflect on a sequence of five wins on the spin as his team enter their winter break.
"I am delighted with the run of results we have had. In many ways the break will be a nice thing for the young lads, but I just hope we can pick it up and take it on in the second half of the season.
"We will do a lot of work before we start again on January 16 and enjoy a little break now which they thoroughly deserve. It will be back to business in January.
Not for the first time this season, Clive Allen reserved a special mention for the goalscoring exploits of Lee Barnard who bought his goal tally to 13 with a hat-trick against Watford on Monday.
