Clive Allen described his Spurs XI side's 7-1 trouncing of Enfield Town on Friday as an 'excellent start' to the pre-season programme.

Recovering from an early deficit, goals from Dorian Dervite, Terry Dixon, Jacques Maghoma, Simon Dawkins, Jamie Davis (two) and Jake Livermore completed a very satisfying evening's work for the young group.

Clive was a naturally contented coach when it came to assessing the performance level reached in the first of seven Spurs XI fixtures.

"It was an excellent start for us, we had a little shock early on, but that just fired the lads up and we went about it in the right way," reacted the Development Coach.

"I thought some of our play was excellent and there were some very good goals - good performances too. You always wonder where they are fitness-wise in the first game, but we played some good football," he continued before reflecting on the fact that it initially appeared a tougher examination than it turned out to be.

"I talked about that at half time, the way we started caused our own problems. Once we played in the right way and got ourselves going, the approach play was good and the finishing came right.

"I am delighted with it. We deserved our goals and the result.

"For all the hard work and leg work we put in on the training ground, it gives you an indication of where you are at, although it can take a little while to find you match legs.

"I thought we looked in pretty good shape and they came back in the right condition."
