CLIVE HAILS RUTHLESS STREAK

Clive Allen believes the key to Monday night’s impressive 3-0 Reserve League victory over Aston Villa was a ruthless streak in front of goal.

Clive Allen believes the key to Monday night’s impressive 3-0 Reserve League victory over Aston Villa was a ruthless streak in front of goal.

It was our first win in six games and it came against a team top of the table thanks to goals from Simon Dawkins, Adel Taarabt and Tomas Pekhart.

And with a 2-0 lead at half-time, coach Clive believes our goals gave us the confidence to kill off the game in the second half.

He said: “The way we started the game was as good as we’ve played. We knew a performance would get us a result and it was a very good performance against an excellent Villa side.

“We’ve talked about our finishing and about being more ruthless when chances appear, and I thought that’s what opened the game up and gave us the confidence to defend in the right way.

“Every time we attacked it looked like there was going to be something on the end of it, which was really pleasing.

“It was a big advantage to go into half-time with that second goal because it gave us a lot of confidence.

“We looked good when we broke and had a good shape about us, and the third goal really clinched the game for us."

Clive also reserved special praise for Taarabt after a sparkling performance from the young Frenchman.

He added: “Adel was in good form in the final third and was always a threat, and we created chances.

“He’s so bright and clever and he opened them up with an exquisite pass for the first goal and Simon had the composure to finish it.”
