Clive Allen pinpointed the difference in front of goal as the difference between the sides as our reserves lost 3-0 at Southampton.
Peter Crouch scored at the start of each half to hand the Saints the victory with the third goal arriving in injury time.
In-between, both sides wasted chances and we could have pulled two or three goals back in our best spell midway through the second half.
Development coach Clive said: "The most important thing is finishing and we've created good chances that we didn't take.
"Crouch was clinical and that won Southampton the game.
"I feel the scoreline flattered them in terms of what it could have been. If it had ended 4-3 or 3-2, that would have been a fairer assessment of the game goals wise.
"We've paid the price for not being clinical and paid the price for making it a game that suited them. They'll be better for that when we play again."
