Clem's welcome break

Posted on 29 March 2001  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Stephen Clemence might not have been on England duty over the past ten days, but he has discovered the benefits of an international break — a welcome holiday.

With Neil Sullivan, Ledley King, Sergei Rebrov, Sol Campbell, Simon Davies, Ciaran Toner, Gary Doherty, Ian Hillier, Steffen Iversen and Luke Young all away with their respective national teams, and another six players on the treatment table, training sessions would have been a bit light on numbers.

So, the likes of Clem, Les Ferdinand and Steffen Freund were awarded a well-deserved week in the sun.

"I had a week’s holiday with the family to relax, recharge a little bit and get ready for the last bit of the season," said a lightly-tanned Clem.

"Obviously at this stage of the season there is no problem with fitness, we’re all fit enough now with only seven weeks left until the end of the campaign.

"If we had just come in and trained for two weeks, there would have been only four players who played against Coventry around and the rest on international duty. So they gave us a few days off which was nice."

So was Clem topping up his fitness as well as his sun tan?

"I ticked over a little bit, but mainly relaxing and recharging."
