Stephen Clemence has warned that more away teams are likely to follow Middlesbrough’s defensive tactics at the Lane for the rest of the season.
Terry Venables masterminded Boro’s somewhat negative approach to Saturday’s game. More often than not there were eight men behind the ball, time was wasted at set-pieces and the play suffocated but it worked — we were left frustrated and the Teesiders left with another point towards their relegation battle.
Wing-back Clemence insisted: “Teams are going to do that against us.
“If we had scored an early goal or just one goal it might have been a different story but unfortunately we didn’t get the goal, they worked very hard and you have to give them credit as well because it is hard the way they set out to play.
“There was a bit of time-wasting and a couple of goals that looked onside on television so that’s annoying as well.
“We outplayed them for the 90 minutes and had wave after wave of attacks but they’ve set out to defend and got what they wanted in a 0-0 draw.
“The good thing is though sometimes in those games you can get beaten 1-0 and we’re still unbeaten at home.”
Southampton are next on Wednesday (December 27, 8pm) and Clemence added: “It’s a tough game at The Dell. We’ve got two away games in Southampton and Ipswich and we’ll be aiming to record our first away victory.”
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
