Clem's mission

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

The name Derby County must hold a special place in the heart of Stephen Clemence — they’re the only side he’s scored a Premiership goal against!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
That is the surprising statistic that our versatile, all-action midfielder seeks to improve on and ‘Clem’ admits that it does play on his mind at times.
“That’s about my only goal, isn’t it?” quipped Clem when it was put to him that he had a bit of a goalscoring record against the Rams. It was not a spectacular strike and the unkind would describe it as more of a bundled goal if they were trying to wind Stephen up a bit.
“Yeah, but there was about seven people on the line and it took quite a bit to force it in.
“No, it was at the end of last season and it was from a corner and I sort of knocked it in when it came to me. They all count.”
But shouldn’t a player as involved in the action as Stephen be troubling the scorers on more occasions?
“I think this season I’m getting in there and having more chances. Over the last couple I probably didn’t have as many. But I’ve had quite a few chances this year and the theory is if I keep getting in there some of them will start going in soon.
“The main thing is at least I’m getting in there,” said Stephen, who confesses that the biggest critic of his goalscoring record is closer to home.
“Definitely my Dad. The lads give me a little bit of stick because they know I’m quite desperate to score some goals. I think when I do get one then hopefully a few will follow. As I say, I am getting the chances.
“I’ve set up a few, if I wasn’t doing that either it might get to me — at least I’m getting involved in some goals. I would like to score more goals but it’s about winning the games.”
Even if he hasn’t been scoring, Stephen has delighted the manager with his approach to playing in an unfamiliar position at left wingback, reason enough for him to be content with his season’s work.
“I am really considering where I’ve been playing,” he added. “Obviously it means there’s another place for me to play for and I want to be playing. The manager knows that I’m better in the middle but I’m happy to play anywhere.”
By Richard Hubbard
