The face in question was that of new Boro hotshot Massimo Maccarone, who Christian recalls used to train with the Milan first team occasionally as a youngster.
The composition of the Middlesbrough team has changed greatly since Christian's time at the Riverside Stadium.
"I know some players that are left, but they have changed a lot of the personnel there. I think that could be the reason they are looking stronger.
"I know the striker Maccarone from my time at Milan. When I was there he was a young player who sometimes trained with us.
"They had a lot of good youngsters over there that worked hard. So it doesn't surprise me that he's come over to England and showed some good things. He was maybe 16 or 17 then and the first time I saw him over here I thought 'I know him!'
"The whole team is looking strong. Carlos Marinelli was there when I was and I thought then he should be in the first team. Maybe he was a bit young, but he is a good player.
"Middlesbrough are really looking good. I have now seen them twice and they have a good team there with good players. It won't be easy on Saturday."
Christian Ziege was watching footage of Middlesbrough earlier this season and spotted a familiar face from his days in Italian football.
