The paper said the full-back was in Spain, along with Sol Campbell, and had a meeting with Archibald, which was also attended by Chris. Archibald, the report said, is acting as a go-between between Spurs and Barca over the transfer of Sol.
Chris was in Barcelona for the Catalan’s final league game of the season against Valencia — on his own, simply watching the game. He did meet Archibald for an unscheduled drink after the game.
Our first team coach was staggered when we informed him of the report.
“Absolute rubbish,” insisted Chris. It is simply that I played with Steve, I know him, and I saw him afterwards. That was it, simple as that.”
Of the speculation regarding Carr, Chris added: “Stephen Carr’s on holiday I presume, it’s total rubbish.
“I went on my own and had no plans even to meet Steve. It just so happens that he was there as well. I went to watch the game, the last of the season, I sat by myself and it just so happened that Steve was at the game and I bumped into him afterwards.
“There were no plans beforehand to meet him — there was nothing premeditated, it just happened that way.”
Chris Hughton has laughed off a report in the Daily Express suggesting that he was in Barcelona with Stephen Carr for a meeting with supposed ‘link’ Steve Archibald over a possible transfer for the player.
