Harry Redknapp was particularly impressed with young midfielders Jake Livermore and Tom Carroll at Stoke.
Jake, 21 and Tom, 19, were up against the experience of former Spur Wilson Palacios, Glenn Whelan and then Salif Daio in the central area in the Carling Cup third round tie at the Britannia Stadium.
Both performed admirably as the match finished goalless after 90 minutes and then extra time and both then stepped-up to convert penalties in the shoot-out.
In the end, misses by Roman Pavlyuchenko and another youngster, Massimo Luongo on his debut, saw the Potters home 7-6 in the shoot-out.
"Jake Livermore and Tom Carroll in midfield were outstanding," reflected Harry.
"Tom is only a slip of a lad but a fantastic footballer, he really knows how to play the game. He's a lad with hardly any experience but he came in and played ever so well.
"Jake Livermore was top class. They are both improving and Jake is pushing for a place in the first team, he has a real chance. It was a good all-round performance."
