Catch of the day

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Adam Smith and Andros Townsend drew the short straw - or should that be were 'given' the short straw - when 49ers Quarterback Alex Smith offered to throw a few American Footballs at training in San Jose on Thursday.

Smith was joined by Offensive Lineman Joe Staley and the pair were great fun, initially observing our first training session - and doing a load of interviews - before joining in.

Of course Smith wasn't going to get away with not showing us his expertise with the American Football (it would have been slightly difficult for Staley to show his expertise - we'd have players in pieces everywhere) and it was just a matter of who would be our 'receivers'.

Suffice to say, the more experienced members of the squad volunteered Adam and Andros.

Now, reaching these 'bombs' was never a problem for the swift-footed pair, but catching the ball was, well, a whole different ball game.

Smith threw the ball absolutely miles - he was probably throwing at 50 per cent as well, tops - but Andros, despite his best efforts, couldn't get near them.

Adam then took over and after a 40-yard sprint, threw himself full-length at the ball - and missed it by about five metres.

Smith then threw the ball to Tom Huddlestone and Gareth Bale at closer quarters with Clive Allen asking him to 'throw one at full speed, into the chest'. The ball went like a bullet, but Tom was up to it and plucked it out of the air.

Great fun, lots of laughs and a full appreciation of the skills of an NFL Quarterback - but Xtra thinks we'll stick to the round ball!

Meanwhile, Staley had earlier showed to be a natural when the 49ers pair joined the lads for a shooting session.

Without a practice and with players and media watching on, the big man listened to Clive's instructions before drilling the ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards.

He followed up with a celebratory dance routine - Xtra grabbed a snap below.
