Carr's derby dismay

Posted on 19 December 2000 - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Dejected Stephen Carr found it difficult to concentrate on the positives after Patrick Vieira’s late heroics for Arsenal denied us a derby victory on Monday night.
The Irish full-back reflected the mood in the changing room after we had managed to hold out for fully 30 minutes of pressure until the final minute when Vieira headed home from a corner for a 1-1 draw.
Carr admitted: “You could say 1-1 against Arsenal is a good result but we don’t look at it that way. To concede with the last kick of the game is such a sucker punch. We still picked up a point though and I suppose that’s the main thing.
“We have to look at the positives, we’re still unbeaten at home, but I can’t stress how disappointed everyone is.
“They had a few chances and Neil Sullivan was brilliant in goal but we had a few opportunities at 1-0 when we could have killed the game off. We didn’t and we got punished for it in the end.
“It looked a clear foul for their goal as well but I suppose some of them you get, some you don’t. It’s certainly more of a case of two points dropped rather than a point gained.”
Sergei Rebrov capped his return from injury to hand us a 1-0 half-time lead and both Tim Sherwood and Darren Anderton went close at the start of the second half before Arsenal — who brought Dennis Bergkamp, Sylvan Wiltord and Vieira off the bench — camped in our half for the final half-hour.
“We expected them to come on,” said Carr. “They have some quality players and players they can bring on to change the game — look at that bench, Bergkamp, Wiltord, Vieira, it’s unbelievable, but we still thought we’d hold out.
“We probably rode our luck a bit but it’s still a killer when you concede a goal at the end like that.
“It probably wasn’t the best game you’ll ever see at the Lane but personally I don’t care as long as we win. These games mean so much to the crowd and it’s all about results.
“If you ask anyone out there they won’t care how we’ve played. There is no point playing brilliantly and getting beaten.
“Anyway we’re still unbeaten at home, we’re moving forward and that’s all that matters. If we can start picking up a few results away from home, who knows?”
Listen to Stephen's thoughts by clicking here
By Paul Miles

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
