Tom frustrated after Foxes' equaliser

Tom Carroll was thrilled to see fellow substitute Dele Alli grab his first Spurs goal at Leicester on Saturday, but admitted the final result was “hard to take.”

England Under-21 international Tom made his first competitive appearance for us in almost two years following loan spells at Queens Park Rangers and Swansea City when he went on for Mousa Dembele during the second half at the KP Stadium.

It was his midfield colleague Dele, also on as a substitute earlier in the game, who opened his account for us to give us an 81st-minute lead.

But Riyad Mahrez’s equaliser for the Foxes less than a minute later ensured the match finished 1-1 and scuppered what would have otherwise been an enjoyable afternoon for Tom.

“Obviously it’s great to get on – it’s my first appearance this year for Spurs so I’m happy about that, but after the equaliser I’m disappointed,” said the 23-year-old central midfielder.

“The lads are all disappointed because after scoring quite late on in the game we should have shut up shop and that should have been the three points in the bag but unfortunately – it must have been just a few seconds later – they got an equaliser and it’s hard to take.

“Don’t get me wrong, Leicester are a good side and they’ll upset some big teams here this year, but we’re disappointed because we know we should have taken the three points.”

Putting his frustration at the end result to one side, having started the afternoon next to Dele on the bench, Tom was pleased to be able to celebrate with his fellow midfielder on the pitch after the former MK Dons man netted his first goal in Spurs colours in only his second appearance for us.

“I was delighted for Dele,” he added. “He’s settled in well since he’s arrived, he scored a lot of goals at MK Dons last year and I’m glad he’s scored here today as well.”
